Writing a Cover Letter
Tips for a successful cover letter
- Make sure that your cover letter is personalized – Include specific references to the position for which you are applying and make sure to address the cover letter using the correct name and title
- Research the company and the position before you put the cover letter together so that you can do a better job of providing specific examples
- Include information about how you learned about the company and/or the position
- Include specific examples from previous jobs of why you are a right fit for the position that you are applying for
- Be sure to proof read your cover letter for spelling and grammatical errors prior to submitting it to a potential employer. It is a great idea to have a friend or family member examine it as well because an outside perspective will often catch errors that you will not.
- Allow your personality to shine through
- Close the letter by informing the potential employer what your next step will be – let them know that you will follow up

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name:
Body of Cover Letter:
The body of your cover letter lets the employer know what position you are applying for, informs them about how you learned of their company and/or the position, allows you to explain any gaps in employment, and allows you to explain why the employer should select you for an interview.
First Paragraph:
The first paragraph of your letter should explain why you are writing. Make sure that you include the position that you are applying for and be very concise.
Middle Paragraphs:
The next section of your cover letter gives you a chance to explain why you would be a good fit for the position. Provide specific examples of previous work experiences and skills that directly relate to what is required for the position. Do not simply re-state the information provided in your resume, but enhance and explain the information. Make sure that you provide supporting evidence to the claims that you are making about your skills.
Final Paragraph:
Conclude your cover letter by thanking the employer for considering you for the position. Do not simply state that you look forward to hearing back, but take the initiative to let them know that you will be following up in one week.
